Are we equipped for the road ahead? 

The transportation industry encounters several challenges. Goods, assets, brand, customer satisfaction, fuel efficiency, and productivity are the only issues that are highlighted. The plight of the freight forwarders and truck drivers is completely ignored in the bargain. There is no one looking after the welfare of the people who are the backbone of the business and without whom the entire system would collapse. 

The team of Lawyered, having consideration for the workforce behind the logistics industry, are the pioneers of LotS - Lawyer on the Spot initiative. This initiative has been launched in collaboration with AITWA - All India Transporters Welfare Association. 

Via this initiative we aim to resolve the issues that the workforce of the logistics industry faces. As a result of this  initiative, while resolving the issues, we also get the opportunity to interact with the vehicle drivers going through long routes, tough working hours, extreme conditions and hear their stories. 

We have, via LotS, resolved many incidents related to accidents. One such incident was wherein two trucks had collided on the way to their respective destinations at a remote location near Motihari, Bihar. The drivers were caught unaware and some police officials were observing the situation from a distance. The drivers were leaving from the place of incidence after settling the issue between themselves when the police officials came on the spot and asked for a penalty for their negligent and rash driving. The officials raised a penalty for Rs. 50,000 which after talks between the parties was reduced to Rs. 20,000 by the officials.

The drivers had amicably resolved the issue amongst themselves and were not ready to pay any penalty. Under the circumstances, one of the drivers whose employer was a subscriber with LotS, called on the 24x7 helpline seeking a remedy. The in-house team from Lawyered assisted them and provided a lawyer to represent the drivers before the police and handled the situation as the concerned authorities were not willing to hear anything and made an issue out of the resolved matter. The timely intervention of the 

Lawyered’s inhouse call service, the situation was resolved. The payment of the imposed penalty which was being demanded on an immediate basis was settled and ultimately no penalty was paid as the situation was tactfully handled on the spot.

This is one of the many incidents of accidents that are reported to the LotS helpline wherein the drivers do not know the wrongs that they have done and are challaned. Due to the lack of knowledge and the high-handed manner of the police and other officials, the drivers get intimidated and end up paying huge penalties to the concerned authorities.

Timely intervention from the LotS 24x7 helpline helps in preventing such additional costs and helps in making the movement of goods and services more cost-effective. With the 24x7 helpline, the drivers can give a call to the in-house team at any time and report any issue that they may be facing. The in-house team of experts will handle the situation and if required also assist in providing a lawyer to the concerned parties.
