Ignorance of the law is no excuse (ignorantia Juris non-excusat). Even a layman is required to have a basic knowledge of the law. A basic understanding of one’s rights and duties makes a person legally empowered and capable of standing his rights and the greater cause of justice for him or the society.

Legal awareness is also known as legal consciousness, which is the empowerment of the individual in terms of the law. Legal awareness enlightens the person regarding the rule of law, its formation and its application. According to the research conducted by Legal Services India, it was found that more than 70% of people are unaware of their rights, and this includes both literate and illiterate communities.
