General Safety Rules for Drivers | Commercial Vehicles Lawyered

Following are some rules that need to be followed to avoid accidents and to be safe on the road. In case, while on the road, any driver encounters any difficulty, please reach out to our team on the 24*7 helpline number - 7.669.449.669 for on-road legal assistance.

  1. Sticking to the Speed Limits: Always follow the speed limit as mentioned on the sign boards. Going beyond the speed limit will attract fines and penalties from authorities and lead to road accidents.
  2. Keep Left: On a two-way road, allow traffic from the opposite direction to pass on your right and on a one-way road, allow vehicles behind you to overtake from your right.
  3. Slow Down: at road junctions, intersections, pedestrian crossings and road corners and wait until you are sure of a clear passage ahead.
  4. Hand Signals are necessary at certain times: When slowing down, extend your right arm palm down and swing it up and down; when stopping, raise your forearm vertically outside the vehicle; when turning right or changing lane to the right hand side, extend your right arm straight out, palm to the front; when turning left or changing lane to the left hand side, extend your right arm and rotate it in an anti-clockwise direction.
  5. Do Not Drive on a one way road: except in the direction permitted. Reversing into a one way street in the wrong direction, is also prohibited.
  6. Do Not Cross The Yellow Line dividing the road even while overtaking. On roads with defined lanes use appropriate indicator signals before changing lanes.
  7. Use The Horn only when essential and do not use it in a silence zone. Do not fit loud, multi-toned or harsh and shrill sounding horns or alarms in your vehicle. Vehicles with altered silencers are also prohibited on the road.
  8. Do Not Brake Suddenly except for safety reasons.
  9. On Mountains and Steep Roads the vehicle driving uphill must be given the right of way by vehicles coming downhill. If the road is not sufficiently wide, pull your vehicle to a stop on the side of the road and allow the driver going uphill to proceed first.
  10. When Road Repair Work is going on slow down and drive at a speed not exceeding twenty five kilometers per hour.
  11. Drivers of Tractors and Goods Vehicles are prohibited from carrying passengers for hire or reward. In a tractor, the driver should not carry any other person and in a goods vehicle, he should not exceed the number of persons permitted in the driver's cabin.
  12. Do Not Overtake when you think it might endanger other traffic on the road if the road ahead is not clearly visible, for example, near a bend or a hill. If you know that the vehicle behind you has begun to overtake you; if the driver ahead of you has not yet signaled his agreement that you pass him.
  13. Avoid Distraction: Make sure that there should not be any distractions while you drive. Stay alert and focussed while driving. Example: Talking on mobile phone is a punishable offence and is a major reason behind road accidents. Another example of distracted driving includes listening to loud music while driving.
  14. Wearing Safety Gear while driving: Wearing a seatbelt while driving is a must for the driver to protect himself from the collision against the windshield. Not only the driver but also the pillions must make sure that they are strapped in order to avoid the after effects of the accident on them.
  15. Avoid Drink and Driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol can impair the reaction time. This kind of driving can always lead to judgment errors and mishaps. Even if the driver feels fine after drinking, he must refrain from doing so.
  16. Maintaining Good condition of the Vehicle: The driver must make sure that he has properly maintained the vehicle and should always recheck before driving. Checking the tyre pressure, break fluids, coolant levels are some of the essential requisites which must be checked and rechecked by the drivers.
  17. Maintain safe distance: The driver should make sure that there is a safe distance maintained between his own vehicle and the vehicle next to him in order to avoid accidents. It gives enough time to react in the given unavoidable circumstance. The three-second rule is a rule of thumb by which a driver may maintain a safe distance at any speed. The rule is that a driver should ideally stay at least three seconds behind any vehicle that is directly in front of the driver's vehicle.
  18. Use dipper: Car dipper is used to signal the vehicles in front of your car to give you the space to overtake. It is generally used at night time. The driver must use a dipper during night time on the highway to let another driver know that you are overtaking.
  19. Indicator: The indicators give signal to the driver as to which direction the driver is turning. This helps in avoiding accidents.
  20. Follow your lane: This practice by the driver helps in following a particular path during the whole journey.
  21. Road Signs: At the side boards on the road, there are some sign boards which mention the speed limit, no honking zones, speed-breakers etc. Follow these signs to avoid any mishaps.
  22. To overtake from right: Since India follows right hand driving, hence the driver must remember to overtake from right.
  23. Always give way to an Emergency Vehicle: It is the responsibility of every person to give way to an emergency vehicle and move to a side when any ambulance or fire brigade is about to cross the road.

Email is a crucial channel in any marketing mix, and never has this been truer than for today’s entrepreneur. Curious what to say.
